Taiwan's PV industry from upstream to downstream of the supply chain is divided into five major aspects, respectively known as polysilicon, silicon wafers, silicon solar cells, silicon modules, and PV systems. There are currently no Taiwanese companies investing in the field of polysilicon materials, and since the silicon wafer suppliers in Taiwan had withdrawn from the market during 2019-2020, only a few companies are currently investing in the production of N-type monocrystalline silicon wafers.
In the past, silicon cell manufacturing was one of Taiwan's major competitive advantages, and the market share was rapidly expanded via the foundry model. In recent years, with the rapid rise of solar photovoltaic production capacity of Mainland China, Taiwanese companies have extended their business model to include downstream module assembly. Such change has resulted in a close strategic alliance between battery and module manufacturers in Taiwan, which allows them to quickly extend their business operation coverage to the fields of domestic and foreign system establishment projects.
For thin-film solar cell modules, although major global suppliers have withdrawn from the market, companies in Taiwan continue to invest in the R&D of CIGS technology. As for the peripheral materials and components, some Taiwanese companies have also invested in the production of conductive paste. Moreover, with rapid growth of the domestic solar energy system market, the market for inverters is also prospering. There are also several companies producing other component materials, such as brackets, aluminum frames, and glass, etc., on a small scale.
